WaterDream: the Art of Bathroom Design

If you’re looking to get some inspiration for bathrooms, check out the WaterDream display at the Museum of Design in Atlanta. The three-part display has something for everybody, taking you through a visual timeline of inventions in toilet layout over the centuries, and highlighting taps and fittings from around the world. The display features the toilet dreams of Phillippe Starck, Jean-Marie Massaud, Patricia Urquiola and the Bouroullec brothers who were challenged to make conceptual bathrooms that celebrate the transformative qualities of water. The display opened in late June and will be on display through September 17, 2011.

More and less: The Style Ethos of Dieter Rams at SFMOMA

A new exhibition featuring more than 200 sketches, prototypes, and initial products by powerful industrial designer Dieter Rams opens Aug. 27. Known for his clearly modernist approach and philosophy about the purpose of design, Rams created iconic and contemporary designs which were all touched by his Ten Principles of Good Design, such as Apple computers. For more than 40 years, Rams was the lead designer for Braun, the German home appliance company, and he has also been a designer for Vitsœ, the German furniture company since 1959.

From the spirit of DIY, celebrate the part of making together with the introduction of the exhibition Power of Making which includes more than 100 exquisitely crafted items. The works on display will be a cabinet of curiosities showing works by both amateurs and leading makers from around the world to present a snapshot of earning our time.
Things will include shaped shoes by Marloes ten Bhömer, fresh Saville Row tailoring by Social Suicide, furniture like a spun metal rotating chair by Thomas Heatherwick to individual handmade puppets from the 2009 film”Fantastic Mr. Fox,” a suspended lamp, (shown above), along with a six-necked guitar.

The Artwork of the Anatolian Kilim: Highlights from the McCoy Jones Collection at the Young
San Francisco, CA
Sept. 10 marks the introduction of a collection featuring Anatolian kilims given to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco by H. McCoy Jones and his wife, Caroline. The display comprises two dozen of the textile arts at the de Young museum. The Anatolian flat-woven kilims on perspective, dating from the 15th to the19th centuries, include a variety of design types and regional styles, in addition to superb examples of artistic and visual prowess. The kilims in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s permanent collection are thought to be the most significant set of Anatolian kilims out Turkey.
