A plastic garden pond does not have to look artificial. Edging the pond with stone and marginal plants such as cattails or irises, and filling it with plants such as lotuses and water lilies makes it fit into its environment. Plants are a necessity if you want to include frogs or fish in the pond as the cover they provide is needed by them. Plants also maintain a little pond in equilibrium, so it requires less maintenance. Because a plastic pond has no soil you can dig , any crops that you include need to maintain a container.
Select a normal plastic pot that is at least 10 inches deep and 15 inches in diameter for a hardy water lily, 20 inches in diameter for a tropical water lily or lotus, and 6 to 20 inches across for other types of aquatic plants — like those who grow in shallow water around the edge of the pond and also the ones that grow beneath the surface of the water depending on the sizes of their root balls.
Fill the of the pot with moist loam. Soil straight from the backyard is fine. Do not use potting soil or blend in any compost, perlite or peat moss, as called for in additional container crops, as it will float to the surface after from the pond.
Place water lily or lotus rhizomes with their tips angled upward and cover leaving the growing tip slightly above ground level. Fill in around the root ball of aquatic plants that grow in soil so their crowns are with the soil.
An aquatic plant fertilizer pellet into the pot along its edge, 2 to 4 inches deep in the ground.
The soil with a layer of pea gravel to keep the soil in place while its origins are established by the plant in the pot.
Lay bricks, a cement block or a pot on the base of the pond as supports to maintain the plant pots at the correct level in the pond to function. Water lilies need 12 to 18 inches of water over their soil, lotuses need only 4 to 6 inches and marginal plants can grow to 6 inches of water in 0. Submerged plants grow in up to 24 inches of water depending on the variety.
Lower the pot into the pond, allowing it to fill with water and place it on the proper support.
