Green Algae!!!!
Good Algae vs. Bad Algae:
Good Algae consists of the fine brownish green algae (~1/4” in size or less) that you find growing on the pond bottom, edges, rocks, etc… It is a place where beneficial bacteria colonize to clean your pond. Do not feel threatened by this stuff.
Bad Algae consists of two different types:
1) Pea soup green or brown water. It does not harm your fish, but who wants to look at it.
2) String algae (aka Blanket weed). This stuff looks like green cotton candy. It will grow in mats on the pond surface, it will grow with a threadlike texture in and around your plants, it will grow down your waterfall, it will grow just about wherever there is water.

Pea Soup Green Water is avoidable. Here are some measures that can be taken to correct the problem.
1) Cover the top water surface with at least 50% of aquatic plant foliage. More coverage may be necessary in hot, full sun ponds. Any water plants will do the trick, but water hyacinths work very well.
2) Use submersible, oxygenating plants. Anacharis is the best. You can also try cabomba or hornwort. You want at least 1 bunch per 2 sq. ft. of surface area of your pond.
3) A good filter. Nothing is better to have than a good biological filter that uses the ponds natural bacteria to clean up the algae for you.
4) Ultraviolet Sterilizers and Ultraviolet Clarifiers will crystal clear your pond in the spring and summer. They will kill the algae that pass through the ultraviolet light.
5) Bacteria will also work well. Both the Ultra Clear and Microbe-lift are concentrated bacteria that feed on algae.
6) A good chemical is Accu-Clear. It is a polymer that sinks the algae to the bottom so your filter will pick it up. It is fish safe.
7) Algae Fix is a new chemical that also works well.
8) Barley Bales also work well if started early to mid spring.
